A truth to carry

The phrase “better than life” can sound startling when life feels difficult. David is not saying that circumstances do not matter. He is naming something that remains when circumstances become unstable: the lovingkindness of God. His steadfast love is not measured by whether the day goes as planned. Anxiety often makes circumstances the only source of permission for peace. If the news is good, you can relax. If everyone is pleased, you can breathe. If the future looks manageable, you can praise. David begins somewhere stronger. God’s love is worthy of praise before conditions improve. To lift your hands may be literal, if that feels natural to you, or it may be an inward posture of release. You lift your hands when you stop gripping the image you hoped life would follow. You lift your hands when you confess that you cannot secure every relationship, outcome, or feeling. This is not defeat. It is worshipful honesty. God’s lovingkindness does not make you careless about life. It makes life safer to live because your worth is no longer balanced on each day’s outcome. You can face a difficult day with open hands because God’s love is not slipping through your fingers. Praise says, “Lord, I value Your presence more than the temporary certainty I keep chasing.” Say it gently. You may need to say it many times. Each time, your heart is learning that God is not a last resort after the mind exhausts itself. He is the first place you can turn.
