A truth to carry
Brokenness can make you expect distance. You may assume God stands back until you have repaired yourself, completed every amends, and learned never to struggle. The worse you feel about the past, the farther away you imagine Him. Yet Psalm 34 places God near the brokenhearted, not near only to those who have become impressive. A contrite spirit is not a person crushed into worthlessness. It is a heart softened by truth. Contrition can say, I harmed people. I harmed myself. I cannot undo everything, but I no longer want to hide, minimize, or repeat it. Shame says the appropriate response is to hate yourself. Godly sorrow says the appropriate response is to turn toward truth, repair, and new life. God's nearness does not erase consequences. He can be near while a relationship remains broken, while legal or financial realities unfold, or while another person wisely chooses distance. Nearness means you do not face those realities alone. Grace strengthens you to accept what is yours without claiming what is not. You can own your choices without assuming you caused every painful thing in your story. Sometimes brokenheartedness is physical as well as emotional. The body may carry withdrawal, exhaustion, anxiety, grief, or the effects of long neglect. Spiritual care should not make you suspicious of practical treatment. A God who comes near can work through physicians, therapists, medication, recovery communities, nutrition, sleep, and safe structure. Receiving care is not spiritual weakness. The nearness of God may be quieter than you expect. It may not arrive as a sudden feeling of peace. It may appear as the courage to tell the truth, the strength to sit through an urge, the friend who answers, or the realization that you do not have to attack yourself tonight. Presence often becomes visible through the next compassionate action. Let God come close to the broken place, not only the part you present as healed. You do not honor Him by keeping your wound outside the room. Bring the regret, the tenderness, and the fear that you will always be this way. The Lord is not waiting across the distance. He is near, and His nearness is where saving work begins.
