A truth to carry
The psalmist does not minimize the multitude. There are many thoughts, not one neat concern. That matters. Sometimes anxiety is not a single fear you can name and solve. It is a crowd of unfinished sentences, memories, predictions, and questions moving through the mind at once. Scripture gives that experience a voice. God’s comforts do not need the crowd of thoughts to become small before they can reach you. His comfort can meet you in the middle of it. It may come through a verse that stays with you, a quiet room, a wise person who listens, a needed meal, a walk, a counseling appointment, or the simple realization that you do not have to believe every thought you have. To delight the soul is not to make you giddy. It is to give the inner life something gentle and good to receive. Anxiety can make the mind suspicious of rest. It may whisper that if you relax, you will miss something important. God’s comfort says that you can be cared for without staying on alert every moment. Praise helps you notice comfort without treating it as insignificant. You can thank God for one steady thing: a safe place, an honest friend, a body that is breathing, a moment of beauty, a promise from Scripture. These are not distractions from spiritual life. They may be the very ways God is delighting your soul. You are allowed to have many thoughts and still be held. You are allowed to seek support and still be faithful. Let God’s comfort become more believable than the claim that you must manage the multitude alone.
