A truth to carry

Psalm 73 begins with confusion and comparison. The writer admits that his feet nearly slipped. Near the end, he discovers a deeper truth: Nevertheless I am continually with thee. He does not claim a flawless path. He recognizes a faithful hand. Nevertheless is a strong word for recovery. I made choices I regret; nevertheless, grace is teaching me truth. Some people may remember me through the past; nevertheless, God calls me by name. I still have vulnerable days; nevertheless, I use support and keep walking. The word does not erase what came before. It refuses to let what came before decide everything after it. God holds the psalmist's right hand while guiding him. The image is intimate and active. Guidance does not require you to find the path alone and then invite God to approve it. You are held while you learn, corrected while you belong, and strengthened while your steps are still becoming steady. This can help you make peace with imperfection. A child learning to walk is not shamed for needing a hand. Dependence is appropriate to the stage and, in spiritual life, never entirely outgrown. You may always need community, structure, and daily surrender. These are not signs that freedom is fake. They may be the form freedom takes. Look back over the past thirty-two days. Perhaps you have learned to distinguish conviction from condemnation, grief from punishment, rest from escape, and boundaries from rejection. Honor that wisdom. It is part of God's counsel. Write it down before urgency makes you forget. Then look ahead without demanding that you feel ready for everything. You do not need strength for every future temptation, conversation, or consequence today. You need to remain within reach of the hand that holds you and the supports through which guidance often comes. You are not graduating from dependence. You are growing into a wiser form of it. Let God hold your hand without embarrassment. Walk at the pace of truth, and allow every steady step to become evidence that you are accompanied.
