A truth to carry
Love may be the hardest truth to receive after shame. Consequences make sense. Suspicion makes sense. Even punishment can feel familiar. But belovedness interrupts the system by saying your deepest identity is received, not earned. John begins with behold, an invitation to stop and look. What manner of love is this? God's love does not wait for a clean history. It bestows family belonging through grace. The language of sons in the King James Version speaks of the status given to God's children - an inheritance of relationship, not a privilege reserved for one gender or one kind of past. Living as beloved is not living without correction. Healthy parents correct because the relationship matters. God's conviction is specific and directional: this was wrong; come into the light; take this next step. Shame is vague and total: you are wrong; disappear. Learn to notice which voice is speaking by the fruit it produces. Belovedness may change how you treat your body. You stop treating it as an enemy to punish or a machine to exhaust. You give it sleep, food, movement, medical care, and safety. You may not feel affection for yourself, but respect can begin before affection. Belovedness also changes how you receive limits. A no does not mean you cease to exist. A relationship ending does not remove you from God's family. Another person's inability to understand your recovery does not make recovery false. The world may continue to know you through an old story. God knows you through relationship. Do not use belovedness to avoid humility. Love gives you enough security to apologize without collapsing, hear feedback without becoming worthless, and accept consequences without turning them into identity. Because you belong, truth no longer has to be survived as annihilation. Behold the love rather than rushing past it. Imagine it being bestowed, placed upon you as a name and a home. You may need to return to this truth many times before it feels natural. Feeling can follow practice. Today, choose one action that a beloved child of God would consider normal care, and let yourself receive it.
