A truth to carry
Some storms arrive from outside: conflict, rejection, bad news, or a consequence you cannot avoid. Others rise within: a racing heart, intrusive memory, craving, shame spiral, or sudden anger that seems larger than the moment. When the storm is loud, you may forget that any other reality exists. The disciples woke Jesus because they believed they were in danger. They did not calm the sea before asking for help. In the same way, you do not need to become peaceful before reaching toward Christ or another person. The call for help can be the first act of peace. Jesus' words, Peace, be still, reveal His authority, but not every inner storm ends instantly. Sometimes peace comes as a dramatic release. More often, it comes as enough calm to avoid the destructive response. The heart still beats fast, but you do not send the message. The craving remains, but you leave the place. The memory hurts, but you tell someone instead of disappearing. A great calm may begin as one protected minute. Self-forgiveness can trigger storms because mercy threatens a familiar system. If you stop punishing yourself, who will make sure you never forget? If you accept grace, will you become careless? These fears confuse remembrance with torment. You can remember clearly through honest practices, amends, boundaries, and accountability. Cruelty is not required to keep truth alive. Build calm before you need it. Practice slow breathing when you are steady. Save support numbers. Plan safe exits. Remove access to what endangers you. Learn which prayers or grounding practices help your body return to the present. Preparation is not a lack of faith. It is wisdom making room for faith under pressure. Imagine Christ present in the boat, not accusing you for the weather but helping you face it. Hear His words directed first toward the chaos, then toward the fearful part of you. Peace. Be still. You are not required to solve the storm while it is shouting. Remain with Christ, follow the safety plan, and let the next calm choice become an act of freedom.
