A truth to carry

Stillness can feel frightening when your mind is used to staying busy. If you stop reviewing, planning, checking, or rehearsing, you may fear that something important will be missed. Yet Psalm 46 does not invite you into empty passivity. It calls you to remember who God is. The command to be still is joined to the command to know. Knowing God is different from collecting more information. You can know many facts and still feel unsafe. The knowledge offered here is personal and anchoring: God is God. He is not competing with your fear for control. He is not asking you to become all-powerful. He is already present in a world that shakes, changes, and sometimes makes no sense. Stillness may be brief today. It may be the moment before you reach for your phone. It may be one breath between a hard thought and your response to it. You do not need a perfect quiet room or a long spiritual routine. You need a small willingness to stop making yourself the guardian of everything. Praise grows in that small pause. You notice the breath in your lungs, the chair supporting your body, the light coming through a window, the fact that God has carried you through other days you once feared. None of these details erase the concern. They remind you that concern is not the only thing present. Let stillness be an act of trust, not another task to master. If your mind wanders, return without scolding yourself. The God you are seeking is not far away from the person who is learning to pause.
